The Texas Music Teacher's Association gathered at Reunion Arena in Dallas for their annual convention. The annual gathering of nearly 4,000 teachers, students, and guest attendees is one of the largest of its kind in music education summits.
As TMTA's 2015/2106 composer of the year, Caleb Wenzel was commissioned to compose a chamber work to close the convention. The commissioned piece, Portraits and Postcards - a quartet for flute, clarinet, vibraphone, and piano - was premiered on June 19 by an ensemble that featured area teachers, an advance piano student, and a local professional player.
Sara Korzekwa, flute
Kate Whaley, clarinet
Dana Sudbourough, vibraphone
Roscoe Bussel, piano
Caleb Wenzel, conductor
Additionally, the Fort Worth Music Teachers Association - who nominated Caleb for the composer of the year award - commissioned a piano duet for the middle school piano ensemble. Sundance Squaredance - a hoedown inspired by the historical cultural district of Ft. Worth - was premiered by eight middle school students from Fort Worth under the direction of Dr. Ilka Araujo of Texas Wesleyan University.
Finally, the Fort Worth Music Teacher's Association high school ensemble performed Caleb's piano duet, Mechanisms. Mechanisms was originally commissioned by the Arlington Music Teacher's Association in 2014. FWMTA's performance was led by Ms. Bonnie Dove of Dove Piano Studio.
