University of Notre Dame students are well-known for their entrepreneurship. Edward Vogel, a senior vocal performance major, has rallied a group of sixteen select undergrads to form a club choir aimed at professional caliber performance. Rather than function as a student-directed ensemble, the students hire their own professional music director and adopt an accelerated rehearsal process, reflecting the standard performance model of professional American choirs.
Christened Our Lady's Consort, the ensemble stands as a Residential Life offering of St. Edward's Residence Hall. Caleb Wenzel has been selected as Music Director for the Consort's inaugural season and will continue as Music Director through the 2017/2018 concert season. Our Lady's Consort will present its first public performance at historic St. Peter Church Barclay Street in New York City. The concert will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the University of Notre Dame.
Mr. Wenzel applauds these students saying, "What the students of Our Lady's Consort have accomplished already is astounding: they have essentially formed their own professional ensemble complete with a board of governance. In just the first months of existence, they have completed a successful fund-raising campaign, planned a tour, commissioned new music, and hired several professional musicians - all with an eye toward planning for future sustainability. I am confident that this will be a fruitful training ground not just for aspiring professional musicians but also for future arts administrators and life-long avocational musicians. I am extremely proud to be a part of this enterprise and am excited for its very bright future."
